Hugo França

Árvore Geometrizada (Geometrized Tree), 2016

Jackfruit tree
6.5 m high

Created from a dead jackfruit tree, the work preserves the memory of the tree while reinventing it, revealing its inner structure through a precise, minimalist intervention. Installed beside one of the park's lakes, Árvore Geometrizada distills a central question in França's career: the possibility of giving new meaning to what seemed destined to disappear. It is no coincidence that its presence is tied to the origins of the art project in Água Preta itself. It was the artist's visits to the region, as early as 2013, that inspired the first residencies, creative workshops, and environmental education activities, as well as the collection that would come to form Usina de Arte.

Biography

Hugo França
Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, 1954
Lives and works between São Paulo and Trancoso
At Usina de Arte: Árvore Geometrizada (2016); Mobiliários Artísticos (2016-2019)

A self-taught designer and sculptor, França has been creating his "furniture sculptures" since the late 1980s from forest and urban waste. His work arises from the direct handling of trunks, roots and condemned trees, reflecting the influences of a Porto Alegre native who now divides his time between São Paulo and Trancoso, in Bahia.
