How does one become who one is? Starting from a simple structure inspired by a coffee filter stand, Julio Villani creates three sculptures that unfold as stages of a single quest to answer this question, as objective as it is existential. Identity appears less as an essence than as an ongoing construction, shaped by the marks accumulated over a lifetime. The work makes self-portraiture an open process, in which each scaffold seems to hold up a provisional stage of this inquiry into a self in constant formation.

Born in Marília, São Paulo, in 1956, and also trained in Paris, he has a multifaceted practice that moves between painting, drawing, embroidery, collage, assemblage, and sculpture, in a process open to experimentation. More interested in the play of associations than in fixed meanings, he weaves together historical references and different artistic traditions.
